The Power of Art and Creativity in Grief

Art and creativity help you evolve through your grief. You’re never going to be the same after the loss of your loved one, but you do have to put yourself back together. The field of Neuro-Aesthetics shows that creativity and art therapy [creating and just appreciating art!] helps you cope, acknowledge and express your emotions, it hs been shown to help with depression and trauma, and it helps you reach non-conscious truths, and even helps get you through your toughest of days. Creative work helps you put yourself back together in a new more evolved way it’s a “You 2.0” post-loss. Repetitive tasks like coloring and origami have been shown to activate the brain’s reward center; decelerating anxiety and increasing a sense of peace and calm.

In her first book “The Heart of Grieving” [coming August 2023] Grief Educator and Holistic Grief Coach [and Art Therapy Practitioner] Pamela Ann Noxon, shows you ways to use creativity and art to help you through grief, like with this art collage of creativity she created. “Art and creative, repetitive tasks are especially important in the early stages of grief immediately following a loss and for the first year or two. The creative force is the life force. I recommend a variety of projects and suggest whatever resonates with a client.

Do you gravitate towards:

  • coloring

  • origami

  • painting

  • collaging

  • journaling and writing

  • singing

  • dancing

  • cooking or baking

  • beading and jewelry making

  • crafting

  • scrapbooking

  • photography

  • sculpting

  • or just fingerprinting?

Or is it right to try something completely new? Anything to help you move your pain, your feelings, and all the powerful emotions of grief out of your mind and nervous system and out through your body. And make something entirely new with a life of its own.

And most importantly- no judging! This work is not about the outcome, it is about the process of becoming and creating and of change. Even spending time appreciating great music, art, poetry, etc. helps you just as much. Both the taking in and the making of art creates a meditative state that is profoundly healing.”
